The End Is Near They’ve Run Out Of Jobs!

    Posted on October 20th, 2008

There are no jobs in (fill in your city’s name). Its not what you know but whom you know that gets you a job in (same city’s name).

How often have you heard those statements? Are they true? They are if you believe them. You will not find a shortage of people willing to spread that negative message. Before you buy into the alleged truth, consider the sources. Typically, those that utter these discouraging facts are either members of the press or people who personally have difficulty finding employment. I would be willing to bet that those same people would find it difficult anywhere.

Lets take a look at the media. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that negative news sells better than happy news. You’ll notice that news programs seldom use a warm fuzzy feel good story to lure you back after a commercial. It’s not sensational enough and it won’t generate good ratings. They’re not going to stand up to a show like the Jerry Springer variety that draws viewers like flies to a carcass.

A financial advisor friend of mine complained that the worst thing an investor could do was to listen to the news or read the financial section of the newspaper. The media needs to sensationalize their material to make you want to read it. He said he is forever calming investors’ nerves because they read in the paper about impending stock market crashes or explosive growth opportunities. What the media was really saying was that the market was either going up or down. Then he likened it to an elevator. Would you get on an elevator if your only choices on the buttons were Soar or Plummet?

A colleague of mine was frustrated after reading a headline in the paper proclaiming that youth unemployment was alarmingly high. He said that, statistically, the numbers have never changed by more than 1% over the last thirty years. The media doesn’t use that information because who would be enticed to read it?

As for those that say there aren’t any jobs here, or you need to be connected to someone, or it will be a hopeless situation, let me introduce you to an old maxim, You will find what you are looking for. I had a client come to me for help with her resume. She told me, People were right. Its not what you know but who you know in this city that gets you a job. I replied, Oh, okay. I asked her about her husband and grown son who had also just moved into the city with her. She said, Oh they are both working. They found jobs right away! Doesn’t it seem odd that for two out of the three newcomers to our city, that the rule doesn’t apply? Apparently, nobody told her husband and son how things work around here.

The next time someone wants to share with you about how bleak and dismal the employment situation is around your city, simply smile, nod and walk away quickly. Are there jobs in your city? Absolutely! I had one client call me at the office to ask me how to politely say no to a job offer. She’d been given four that week but could only choose one. Poor woman, I guess no one filled her in on the news about a job shortage.

A wise man once told me that if he were diagnosed with a disease where there was only a 10% survival rate he would get busy studying what the 10% did that the other 90% didn’t. Same logic applies here, study what the successful job seekers have done and do the same. Create your own good news.

Larry Arrance has facilitated workshops for over 4,000 job seekers and career changers. He has personally guided hundreds through the development of powerful marketing tools in their quest to gain employment. During his 12 years as an employment coach and facilitator he has helped clients that ranged from those who were just entering the market, the long-termed unemployed, professionals making major career changes, and victims of restructuring. He is one the part of the three amigos, specializing in career and job search advice. http://www.winthedebtgame.com

Enhance Your Career: 3 Simple Strategic Tips For Improving Your Career Plan

    Posted on October 18th, 2008

So you want to enhance your career. You are on a look out for what you can do to greatly impact your career path. Are there simple strategies that you can implement that can immediately have a positive influence on your career? If there are, what are they?

The answer is yes, there are simple strategies that you can do in order for you to enhance your career. This is a self-reflective strategy. I refer to it as simple because you alone can do this. For as long as you are truthful with yourself then this is as simple as it gets.

However, there is a word of caution. Nothing can enhance your career if you feel that there is not much you can improve on already. And while these strategies are simple, they can only be achieved IF you are willing to make that change.

    1. Attitude
When it comes to attitude I have always championed that you can define your attitude as one of pride, passion and belief. In everything that you do, do it with pride, passion and belief. And remember to back these up with skills and knowledge, direction and action.

Lets take these further. To enhance your career, hardworking, humility and honesty is essential. Hardworking is fairly straightforward. It just means nothing comes easy. There are no rewards in the working world that comes without hard work. In fact, there is nothing in life that comes without hard work.

Humility comes with maturity. When you know you do not know enough then you begin to be a student again. You will want to enhance your skills and knowledge, which will in turn enhance your career.

Do you conduct your work honestly? How do you deal with your colleagues? Is it with integrity? Do you admit to your mistakes and not blame anyone for it? Honesty is not just about dealing with others. It is also being honest with yourself. Can you face your own ghost? Are you afraid to face your weaknesses without being defensive? Are you afraid to confront your lack of strengths? Being honest with yourself leads to an awareness. Step one to enhance your career is to define your attitude.

    2. Awareness
An awareness of your strengths and weaknesses is a necessary step if you want to enhance your career. This awareness is one that is self-reflective. One that makes you feel a sense of inadequacy. This sense of inadequacy creates an intrinsic need for improvement.

The energy generated from this awareness is a positive energy that propels you with the confidence to improve.

If you want to enhance your career, ask yourself - do you have this awareness? One that is clear about where you are, why are you there, where you can be and how do you get there? An awareness of the need to improve and an awareness of what you truly want is a simple strategy that can enhance your career. But how many of us can truly claim that we have this awareness? And how many can claim, with this awareness there is an action that works on it?

Many sit around all day lamenting why are they not progressing? They feel unappreciated.

Hard work is not being rewarded. Let me point out something. According to the Websters Universal College Dictionary - appreciate is to be fully conscious of; be aware of. If you want to be appreciated, start appreciating your strengths and weaknesses. Then only can you begin to talk about how to enhance your career.

    3. Action
So, you have a positive attitude and a positive awareness of yourself. But do you act upon them? If you do act upon them, do you do it at a pace that is right for you? Knowing the pace that is right for you is all about self-awareness.

There are two parts to this action, one is patience and the other persistence. Patience is about proceeding calmly or moving slowly with zero anticipation. No plans to enhance your career can be successful without solid action from your end. And solid action from your end means hard work.

Which is the other part of action, one that is persistent. One that is doing incessantly or progresses with dogged determination.

As you can see these are truly 3 simple strategic tips you can implement immediately that can positively enhance your career. Each is inter-related to another and feeds upon each other. If you can get it smoothly into motion there is no telling how far you can go.

    Your Next Job: What Is A &quotReputable Company&quot? (Part 2 Of A 5Part Series)

    Posted on October 14th, 2008

Have you ever been offered a job, accepted it, and began working only to say to yourself a few weeks later, Hey, wait a minute. This is not what I want!? But, you stick around. A month or two later, not only have your feelings not changed, they’ve intensified.

Quitting so soon may be a rash move. How would you explain it on your resume? Besides, you’ve consulted your friends or your spouse and continue to hear, Stick it out. It can’t be that bad, or You can’t quit now. You just started!

You hate your job, but you passively stuff the feelings inside saying, At least it’s a paycheck.

What went wrong? Clearly, its not your perfect job.

Just as we discussed the importance of defining the right opportunity, part of that right opportunity means not only knowing if you want a reputable firm or not, but your definition of it.

Reputable firm is a phrase that, as a recruiter, I heard constantly, whether those exact words were used or not. When I asked what it meant, I heard, A GOOD company. One I’d enjoy working for. Hmmmm. Not exactly a clear definition.

    What constitutes a reputable company?

We can all agree that Arthur Anderson and Enron were DISreputable companies! But what about Disney? It strives to be reputable and many consider it so. But many of its films don’t do so well, there has been much divisiveness in its upper ranks, and it supports some causes many think it shouldn’t … yet its … well … DISNEY.

    Reputable … or not?

Fannie Mae was just fined $400 million, not only for allegedly manipulating its accounting, but also for lying to investors. Yet, as recently as 2001, for the second time, it was ranked in the top ten companies for working mothers because of its child care programs, flexibility in working arrangements, and advancement for womenand this still holds true.

    Reputable … or not?

Now consider the companies that aren’t newsmakers and have policies or principles that people would never know about unless (or until) they work there.

See why it’s important to be specific?

Unless you state that you want a company that sells its products with integrity and maintains a philosophy of building relationships with customersreputable could mean anythinguntil you’re working there. Then it’s too late!

What do you gain by being specific? Well, if the company is doing anything shady, the interviewer may hear what you are saying and won’t ask you back. The ethical company will ask you back and appreciate your candor.

But isnt working for a reputable company an obvious desire? Would anyone want a DISreputable company? Well … yes!

Some people like troubled companies and turnaroundsand those that do, know it and say so. Those who haven’t given much thought to the issue tend to utter the reputable company phrase. They often find themselves working for a company that leaves them queasy.

If the company or department is struggling, or the piece for which you’re interviewing is a startup operation and this doesn’t turn you on, by all means speak up. Both parties will be happier parting ways earlier rather than later.

The overall theme is finding your perfect job and staying in control so that you are asked back and can decide if you want to return or not. However, that outcome and the resulting choice presumes you’ve stated clearly the opportunity you’re seeking and that’s what the company is.

When the company is not that, you might not be asked back, and you may never know why. But stating your definition instead of using a generic phrase isstay with me herewhat gave you control of the outcome, even when it appears that you lost control.

Whether you know this at the time or not is irrelevant. You’re focusing on what YOU want based on what YOU’VE defined as important.
